When we think of streaming music we usually think about Spotify first, and rightfully so, since the music streaming platform has the largest share of the market. Apple Music usually comes in as an afterthought, although the service is generally loved by users and artists alike and comes in just behind Spotify in market share.

Apple Music Statistics

Here are some Apple Music statistics that might make you think differently about the service.

  • Apple Music has over 93 million subscribers as of 2024, up from 88 million in 2022.
  • The platform generated $9.2 billion USD in revenue in 2023, contributing 6.4% to Apple’s total services revenue.
  • Apple Music holds a 30.7% share of the U.S. music streaming market, ranking second after Spotify, which has 36%.
  • Available in 167 countries, Apple Music offers a diverse catalog of over 100 million songs and 30,000 playlists.
  • Approximately 56% of users are female, and 44% are male. The service is popular across various age groups, with a significant portion of users aged 25 to 34.
  • On average, Apple Music pays artists $0.01 USD per stream, which is higher than many competitors.
  • The platform offers Lossless and Spatial Audio features, enhancing the listening experience with high-quality sound.
  • In 2024, Apple Music introduced a 24-hour music video channel and relaunched Beats 1 Radio as Apple Music 1, expanding its content offerings.
  •  In 2024, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” topped Apple Music’s global song chart, marking his first-ever No.1 on this list.

Some Thoughts

One of the data points that jump out is the fact that Apple Music pays a royalty rate averaging around a penny per stream, about three times what Spotify pays. There are a lot of variables in this figure, but virtually all per-stream royalty rates are a rough average.

Another interesting point is that Apple Music is nearing a hundred million subscribers. Ten years ago when music streaming was just starting, there were doubts that the entire industry would ever reach that number, which was considered the point where everyone would actually begin to financially benefit.

Besides the data points above, probably the best thing about the service is that it doesn’t need to stoop to AI-generated fake songs and artists in order to turn a profit, thanks to the service being just a small piece of Apple’s total revenue stream. Amazon Music is the same. Some say it’s a loss-leader for both, but that’s a benefit for the music industry on any level.

Regardless of if you’re a user or not, Apple Music is here to stay, and most artists are very happy it is.
