Why Is Music Getting Worse? Rick Beato has two answers

Is music getting worse? Rick Beaton, whose commentaries and interviews have 4.3 million subscribers on YouTube, thinks so, and he thinks he knows why.

Beato’s arguments about why music is getting worse are based on two well-worn but still accurate music industry tropes.

First, according to Beato, music is too easy to produce, leading to a marketplace filled with mediocre music.

Second, in the age of streaming, music is now too easy to consume. Streaming enables music consumption at virtually no cost, which upends the value of music and the intensity of the relationship between a fan and the music they love.

Two weeks and 2.6 million views after posting the first video, Rick Beato had received a lot of feedback from his audience, leading him to upload a second one to address some of those comments.

In it, he shares some “eye-opening data” from Google Trends that shows how interest in music has waned over time. Beato explores why and what it all means for the future.
