Indie music pioneer Molly Neuman is CD Baby’s new President

Downtown Music has named Molly Neuman as President of its d.i.y. music distribution division, CD Baby, as part of a greater reorganization.

Molly Neuman

Neuman has a long history in independent music including as a founding member of the influential indie
band Bratmobile. She was a pioneer in the ’90s riot grrrl movement, penning the zine that coined the phrase in its title and co-owned the now-defunct Berkeley-based Lookout! Records.

She’s also held executive-level positions at Songtrust, Kickstarter, and Downtown Music Holdings and served as interim President at the American Association of Independent Music (A2iM). Most recently, Neuman served as Chief Marketing Officer of CD Baby owner Downtown.

Her new brief includes Downtown’s Direct-to-Creator brands, CD Baby and Soundrop.

Neuman succeeds CD Baby President Scott Williams, who will remain a consultant. COO Christine Barnum, a longstanding member of the CD Baby leadership team, will also be leaving the company.

Bruce Houghton is the Founder and Editor of Hypebot, a Senior Advisor at Bandsintown, President of the Skyline Artists Agency, and a Berklee College Of Music professor.
