UPDATE: CD Baby, Soundrop layoffs total 28

UPDATE: 28 CD Baby staffers across engineering, marketing, artist services, and operations have been laid off, a company representative shared with Hypebot.

Here is the official CD Baby statement:

“Last week CD Baby and Soundrop parted ways with a number of employees at the companies. This was a difficult decision but one needed to better align CD Baby and Soundrop with the current economic environment and set the companies up for long-term growth and success. These decisions were made with a great deal of care and empathy for those affected and with an eye toward the future success of CD Baby and Soundrop.”

CD Baby and Soundrop parent Downtown recently announced that it was consolidating its B2B services, including FUGA, Downtown Neighbouring Rights, Adrev, and the company’s artist, label services, and publishing administration units into a single division led by FUGA chief Pieter Van Rijn.

Neither Kevin Breuner nor Chris Robley – both well-known in the DIY music community for their work as educators and artist advocates – were among those laid off at CD Baby.

Bruce Houghton is Founder and Editor of Hypebot and MusicThinkTank and serves as a Senior Advisor to Bandsintown which acquired both publications in 2019. He is the Founder and President of the Skyline Artists Agency and a professor for the Berklee College Of Music.

  1. The amount of issues at CD Baby will surprise you. From nepotism to sexual harassment being hidden. Do the research. Ask around. You will find the truth.
