UK label growth confirms indie music’s ascendance
The UK independent label market grew to 26% in 2020 and that trend is accelerating in 2021.
This marks the fifth straight year of indie growth as measured by album equivalent sales which combine streams, digital and physical sales, according to British label trade groups BPI and AIM.
UK indie labels also notched these wins in 2020 and Q1 2021:
- 35% of vinyl LP sales in 2020 / 39.8% in Q1 2021
- almost 30% of CD sales is 2020 / 32.5% in Q1 2021
- 24.5% of streaming consumption in 2020 / 25.8% in Q1 2021
