How Data Can Be a Time Saver
During our conversation, Jordan touches upon how data can be a real advantage when understanding which part of your song catalog is performing better than the rest, including where and in what chronological patterns. In an A&R application, data isn’t everything, but it can surely cut to the chase.
There’s opinion and there’s data…. I think in every aspect, it’s always good to put your best foot forward, unless you’re trying to support some sleeper and that’s cool too … but if gravity’s already pulling in that direction, who doesn’t want to side with the winner already? It’s great to be able to find talent … that’s already falling on ears that are ready to hear it.
The More the Music Game Changes, the More it Stays the Same
Keeping in touch with his punk rock roots, Jordan champions a do-it-yourself approach and prizes the artistry in the artist. This includes honoring your point of view, especially when potential business team members might not.
Quality is first…. Always be yourself, don’t change your qualities for anybody. If they ask you to, it means they’re not respecting you as an artist.
While music quality remains first in his book, Jordan reminds budding voices that they are empowered to control their brand 100 percent, if they want. Chances are they’ll have to at least be proficient in all of the skills (e.g., marketing, financials, strategy) before starting to build their business team in earnest.
Artists unfortunately can’t just be artists nowadays, they have to be CEOs of their own little companies…. They’re never going to be able to argue any of their points unless they’re educated completely.
