Artist’s Guide To Activism: What Every Musician Can Do

Activists and organizations the world over are demanding change and reform, but many artists remains unsure what they can do to most effectively help in the fight. Here, we break down five things artists can do become activists.

People everywhere are demanding change, but some artists still don’t understand how their career figures into the fight for a better, more equitable future for all.

We are far beyond the point of no return. Those who had spent the past few months wondering if life will ever go back to the way it was before COVID-19 forced everyone indoors now have their answer: No. The world has changed, and it is continuing to improve on an almost daily basis as people everywhere take to the street to demand a better future for all. But how does your career fit into the world of activism? In the simplest terms, activism is the act of campaigning for change. It’s a constant, unyielding demand to see life and society evolve to reflect how a group or individual believes people should exist. A good example of activism is the debate around abortion. Some people are pro-life, but others are pro-choice. Both sides are practicing activism.Musicians have many opportunities to participate in activism, but before that can happen, artists must first educate themselves. They need to identify the issues that matter most to them and work to understand those topics as thoroughly as possible. They also need to understand the history of the problem, current developments, and what various organizations that are hoping to address the issue believe. Knowing all that helps create informed opinions that activists use to create a meaningful discourse that (hopefully) leads to lasting change.

In this episode of Music Biz 101, host James Shotwell breaks down five simple steps virtually all musicians can take to become activists. Even with the slightest amount of effort, you can play a role in building a brighter future for us all.

  1. I think Objectivism has the ability solve any problem irrespective of the obstacles if each individual has a specific objective in life. And capitalism added to it makes it great.
