Record Store Day Drove 827,000 In Vinyl Albums Sales, 72% Came From Indie Stores
Record Store Day 2019 drove another record year of vinyl sales. 827,000 vinyl albums sold in the U.S. during the week ending April 18, according to Nielsen Music. That's a Record Store Day week record and the third-largest sales week for vinyl albums since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991.
- 72% or 673,000 of those vinyl albums were sold via independent record stores – the biggest week ever for the format at indie stores in Nielsen Music history.
- This year's vinyl album sales were up 12.8% compared to the 733,00 vinyl albums sold during last year's Record Store Day week.
- 40.4% of all physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) sold during the week were vinyl 827,000 of a total 2.05 million.
