R. Kelly Streams Increase After Spotify Ban
A week after Spotify made R. Kelly the poster boy for its "Hate Content and Hurtful Conduct" policy, total streams of his music actually went up slightly. Last week, Spotify removed the R&B singer’s music from its official playlists, citing its new policy.
Before Spotify's May 10th announcement, R. Kelly averaged 6,584,000 weekly streams for the year. But from May 10 to May 16 his streams totalled 6,676,000 streams for the week, according to Nielsen Music.
This small bump may have occurred because of the publicity surrounding Spotify's announcement, and may taper off over time. If not, it calls into question the overall power of Spotify's band and its official playlists, at least for heritage tracks and artists.
New Legal Troubles
The news what not all good for Kelly, however. A women filed a lawsuit Monday alleging that the singer sexually assaulted her, locked her in a room to punish her for failing to please him and infected her with herpes.
