Blade Runner 2049 Tops Disappointing Box Office Weekend
While Warner Bros.' 'Blade Runner 2049' topped the box office this weekend, the expensive science fiction movie failed to meet projections for its opening weekend.
The sequel to the 1982 sci-fi cult classic brought in an estimated $31.5 million during its opening in North America, far short of the $43M-$47M domestic debut that the studio was hoping for.
Worldwide, 'Blade Runner 2049' generated $81.7M in box office revenue, according to estimates published by comScore, which is about half of its estimated $180m production budget. The film, which was co-financed by Alcon Entertainment and Sony with Warner Bros., stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford who reprised his role from the first outing as Rick Deckard.
20th Century Fox's 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' continued to chug along, adding $8.1M in North America and $33.6M worldwide, while the body swap comedy 'Never Say Die' added a respectable $66.0M in interntional markets.
