Music is a unique art form that reaches so many and inspires empathy transcending all boundaries. It draws people together and can spawn change in a big way. That is why many artists and organizations choose to harness the community music creates to raise support for a number of special causes. Check out some of these great initiatives and learn how you can get involved!
Ten Bands One Cause
Each year, ten bands take part by reissuing their album on limited edition pink vinyl all for one cause. This year, Ten Bands One Cause hopes to raise $60,000 for Gilda’s Club NYC, which provides support for both those diagnosed with cancer and their caretakers. In the past four years the initiative has helped donate over $144,000 to the cause. Music for 2017 includes vinyl from Metallica, Portugal. The Man, Lord Huron, Dustin Kensrue, Gary Clark Jr, Lucinda Williams, Mastodon, Four Year Strong, Blue October and GWAR. Pick up your favorites at Soundstage Direct or anywhere vinyl is sold.
Music 4 The Cure
Music 4 The Cure also supports Gilda’s Club NYC, named after Gilda Radner, the Saturday Night Live comedian who battled cancer and passed away at the young age of 43. These limited edition reissues will be released on blue vinyl during September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Get some great music including The Black Crowes, Ringo Starr, Slightly Stoopid and Meatloaf while also giving back. Order your copy here through Best Buy, Barnes & Nobels, FYE or at participating local record stores.
MINDFUL VINYL
Founded by our own Michael Heyliger and partners Megaforce / MRI, MINDFUL VINYL releases unique limited edition green vinyl to spread awareness and create conversation surrounding mental illness. Previously, MINDFUL VINYL released Bad Brains’ “Build A Nation” to support emotional health and suicide prevention for youth through the JED Foundation. This year for Black Friday Record Store Day, you can find the soundtrack of incredibly popular and mental health themed film Silver Linings Playbook pressed for the first time on green vinyl.
I loved this post because it shows how music is helping people’s lives. It is incredible that the power of music can bring people together to support a cause. I am excited to see that I can participate in many different ways simply by doing something that I already love, listening to music. I hope to see many more organizations come together through music to provoke positive change in the world.
