Concert Promoter AEG Sets Aggressive Environmental Goals

A concert promoter with a Senior Director of Energy and Environment? It's true and AEG's announced at SXSW Eco on Tuesday that the global concert promoter was adopting a new, science-based goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint.

Overall, concert promoter AEG has reduced annual GHG emissions by 13% at sites that have been in its portfolio since 2010 — the equivalent of taking 3,200 vehicles off the road, the company said.

In its 2016 sustainability report released on Tuesday, AEG outlined its progress towards the company’s new set of 2020 Environmental Goals that are based on performance metrics collected from its worldwide venues, festivals and offices.

The company’s 2020 goals are as follows:

Reduce GHG emissions across all operations by 3.2% per year from 2010 to 2020. This new science-based GHG goal ensures emissions reductions are aligned with recommendations made by the scientific community to keep global temperatures from increasing more than 2 degrees Celsius and will ensure that AEG is doing its part to help avoid the worst of climate change.
Reduce potable water use at water-stressed sites by 2.3% per year from 2010 to 2020. The new water target focuses potable water conservation efforts on sites in “water-stressed” regions as identified by the World Resources Institute.
Divert 70% of waste from landfill across all operations by 2020. AEG surpassed its original waste diversion goal of 25% several years ago. Its new 70% target will help AEG move closer to its long-term vision of zero waste.

The company's progress report indicated that they seem to be on track.

The company's accomplishments in the environmental arena include:

London’s The O2 district reaching 100% sourcing of renewable electricity in 2015, making it the third site in the AEG portfolio to reach this milestone.
Reducing annual potable water consumption by 27 million liters at water-stressed sites from 2010 to 2015, equivalent to about 11 Olympic sized swimming pools.
In 2015, Los Angeles Convention Center achieving LEED Gold recertification, making it the largest U.S. convention center to do so.

“We are excited to share another chapter of our sustainability story and to announce AEG’s new 2020 Environmental Goals. We put a lot of thought into these goals and I hope our story inspires further action on the important issues of greenhouse gas reduction, potable water conservation, and waste reduction,” said Marler told the SXSW Eco crowd.
