Kesha Loses Dr. Luke Contract Dispute, Taylor Swift Donates $250K To Help Embattled Singer
It's a lesson in contract law as a weapon instead of a framework for agreement. Kesha lost a major round in her battle with producer Dr. Luke on Friday, but Taylor Swift offered the beleaguered singer a ray of hope with a $250,000 donation.
Singer Kesha broke down in tears in a Manhattan court room on Friday after a judge denied her request for an injunction that would have temporarily released her from her contractual obligations with Sony Records, the New York Post reported. The singer had claimed she was unable to continue working with producer Dr. Luke (AKA Luke Gottwald) who holds her exclusive contract, and that Sony Music has refused to promote her albums if she works with a different producer.
However, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich said that Sony was likely to suffer irreparable harm if Kesha was not compelled to abide by a contract that requires her to make six more albums with the company. The 28-year-old Kesha had previously claimed that Gottwald drugged and raped her shortly after her 18th birthday. Gottwald has not been charged in connection with the accusations. - via CelebrityAccess
Taylor Swift, who has an uncanny, and seemingly sincere, knack for jumping into public battles at just the right time, has come to Kesha's aid.
“In a show of support, Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” her representative told media outlets.
In a series of tweets, Kesha's mother confirmed the donation and offered thanks “A persons wealth is not measured by what they have but by WHO they help with it,” wrote Pebe Sebert, who tweets @keshasMom. “And Taylor Swift is a truly RICH PERSON. Thank you… Most important for Kesha, is that these beautiful, powerful women are standing behind her, letting the world see how powerful the truth is!”
