The Orchard Dumps SoundExchange, Goes Direct To SiriusXM For Royalties
Once only available to major players, direct deals with digital broadcasters and services are starting to trickle down into the music indie sector. The latest defection from SoundExchange is indie music and film distributor The Orchard, who announced the move in a letter to its artists and labels. Some of the better know labels distributed by The Orchard include Cleopatra Daptone, Eclipse, Frenchkiss, Purenoise, Nuclear Blast, Sesame Street, TVT and Shoot to Kill Music
While details of the deal were not disclosed, The Orchard promised its clients "highly improved accuracy" and "more money in your pockets," along with monthly instead of quarterly reporting.
And hinting that The Orchard had gotten the kind of preferred airplay and access promises that we've seen some other similar deals, the distributor promised that SiriusXM would be giving "more airtime" and "more attention to Orchard artists and labels
Orchard is a distributor not a label. I don’t think Orchard has the rights to collect master rights?
This has to do with the Fair Digital Distribution Deal which our company signed and plans to honor. It’s your money you go get it and let us worry about distribution which is really heating up. BTW if you need a physicaldistributiondeal.com let us know it’s never been easier.
SoundExchange has already gone to monthly reporting, so “monthly instead of quarterly reporting” suggests some advantage of a direct deal and is therefore misleading.
