Bonnaroo Plans Hackathon At Southland, Announces 5 Year Partnership With Red Bull Music Academy
Bonnaroo is an innovative festival on many levels. They will be partnering with the new Southland Conference to stage a Hackeroo, a Bonnaroo-focused hackathon, June 9 right before their own festival June 12 to 15. They also recently announced a partnership with the Red Bull Music Academy that will bring RBMA Bass Camp to the festival. RBMA will also have an after-hours stage and will create a special village including permanent facilities.
Bonnaroo has long struck me as one of the more interesting and innovative festivals in America's growing festival scene.
From supporting those in need to providing luxury options to drawing the line at corporate stage sponsorships, Bonnaroo seems committed to building a strong business that doesn't simply emphasize the bottom line.
Hackaroo Comes to Southland
Last year Bonnaroo held their first hackathon with this challenge to participants:
"The challenge is to create innovative uses for the fan-generated content at Bonnaroo and to memorialize and share the experience of Bonnaroo using the best of web and mobile technology."
Now they're bringing Hackaroo to the Southland Conference 2014. This is the second Southland conference, last year it was called the Southland Summit, and has no connection, as far as I know, to any previous endeavor titled Southland Music Festival.
There's an interesting Silicon Valley meets Nashville dynamic in that this year Sarah Lacy and Pando are booking the event. Pando already connected with Bonnaroo for the music aspects of Southland and yesterday they announced Hackeroo as a component of Southland.
This year Hackeroo participants will focus on enhancing the live event experience.
Bonnaroo x Red Bull Music Academy
Last week Bonnaroo announced a 5 year partnership with Red Bull Music Academy to:
"bring RBMA Bass Camp and an after-hours RBMA Stage to the festival grounds through 2018. As part of the partnership, Red Bull Music Academy will create a special village at Bonnaroo, complete with permanent recording studios and living spaces for participants to create and collaborate on site."
Camp participants will get to play on the stage along with "big name festival artists."
Sounds like a great combo and a fun opportunity.
