Rock & Pop Still Dominate U.S. Digital Music Sales [CHART]
According to Nielsen SoundScan, digital track sales were up 5% in
2012. 1,336 million digital songs were downloaded in the United States, and as this Statista chart shows, rock still remains the #1 genre.
How is this even possible? The amount of new pop and rap music clearly oversaturates the market. Is it because rock has been the primary leader for so long in the past and therefore it’s still more widely known and liked?
I wonder how many bands that the average listener would consider as “pop” actually define themselves as “rock” instead…
I have a feeling that in 2013 the “line” between genres is going to blur massively. I can’t wait. Thanks for posting. Matt x
