UPDATED: Russian Court Sentences Pussy Riot To 2 Years In Jail
(UPDATE 2) A Russian judge today pronounced the three members of punk band Pussy Riot guilty of hooliganism and sentenced them to two years in prison. The trial has received international attention and is seen as further evidence of Russia's intolerance of dissent.
The musicians had each faced a maximum seven years in prison.
The three were arrested in March during a guerrilla performance in Moscow's main cathedral during which they called on the Virgin Mary to protect Russia against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Celebrities including Madonna and Paul McCartney have pledged support for the young musicians in a fight that is seen as a test of freedom of speech and artistic expression in Russia.
Amnesty International has also voiced their support; and protests in more than a dozen cities globally are expected to follow today's verdict.
