Visit & Share “Virtual Worlds” On Daydream.fm
Guest post by Kyle Bylin of Live Nation Labs.
Ever wished you could take the coffee shop home with you? The chorus of ambient noise and bustling bodies that fuel your creative energy and help you focus on your most important tasks.
Now, you can. Daydream.fm combines the soundtrack of your life with the buzz that fills up your day to create a virtual and immersive world. Whether you’re looking to cozy up to a crackling fireplace or walk down the street on a rainy night, Daydream.fm enables you to tune in and tune out.
If you’re enjoying the mood set by Norah Jones and dancing flames, you can sit back and let the soundscape play out or skip ahead and engross yourself in other worlds created by the community.
Currently, Daydream.fm offers you the usual music discovery tools—like following friends or tags—but Ethan Gahng, the website’s creator, hopes to add more serendipity to the experience soon.
“Serendipitous discovery is important, because staying at one world too long gets boring,” says Gahng. “It’s hard to get this element right as each hop needs to be compelling and emotionally relevant.”
But Daydream.fm does more than stimulate productivity. In Gahng’s pursuit to recreate the aura of a bustling coffee shop and get some work done, he discovered that his worlds preserve emotion too.
“Normally, emotion is something that just ‘happens’ and we take the process for granted,” says Gahng. “These virtual ‘worlds’ give people a place where they can connect on an emotional level.”
When you listen to the song “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver blended with the sound of raindrops and traffic passing by, it evokes the sensation of looking out a window and missing someone you love.
If you feel this way now or have felt this way before, you may feel compelled to leave a comment and connect with the creator of world, saying that you can relate to it and offer some words of encouragement.
That’s the hope, anyway. For now, Gahng is focused on creating a smooth transition within each world, so that the “rainy night” listener continues to enjoy sentimental music, and ease the leap for them between worlds, so that they won’t feel jarred when they travel from their windowsill to a beach party.
More fanatic users will be excited to learn that they can create an account and build their own virtual worlds. By clicking the “create your own” tab and using the site tool to combine a visual (either a photo or video clip) with an ambience and a song, you can publish your own world to the community.
The pool of content is shallow, but it should expand over time. Gahng has developed this service and shared his world with you, and now he’s hoping you’ll feel inspired and share your world with him.
That would be a dream come true.
