Move Over Pandora, Spotify Launches Mobile Radio
If the Songza surge wasn't enough to make Pandora stock holders nervous, Spotify announced that they too getting deeper into mobile radio. A new mobile radio feature will be available in the coming days as part of Spotify's next iOS update. An Android app update will follow within weeks. Spotify Mobile Radio strongly resembles Pandora, but draws on a deeper 15 million track catalog. Features include:
- Play millions of songs everywhere. Like on the desktop, mobile radio has the entire Spotify catalog.
- Create stations based on any artist, album or playlist, and let Spotify do the work. Skip tacks that don't fit.
- Give a track a thumbs up and it will be saved to a “Liked from Radio” playlist.
- Every time a song gets a thumbs up (or down), the app learns the user's taste.
In most territories, Spotify Mobile Radio will only be available to Premium users, with a free trial. But as a result of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) licensing laws, Spotify wil offer a standalone free version of the mobile radio feature in the US.
Spotify says thy are working to bring a free mobile radio service to Spotify users in all countries over time, subject to licensing.
