Rdio Launching In Brazil, Australia, Germany & More
(UPDATE 2) Digital music streaming service Rdio is launching in Brazil as "Oi Rdio" later this week. Co-branded as “Oi Rdio,” it is the first on-demand service with social music discovery to launch there. Rdio currently operates in the U.S. and Canada and plans an early 2012 launch in Germany and Australia. Reports point to Rdio spreading to 100+ countries before the end of next year.
Rdio worked with Oi, Brazil's largest telecommunications telephone company and the second largest in Latin America, to tap into its base of 17 million subscribers. The service is available for both Oi and non-Oi subscribers with a free 7 day trial.
UPDATE FROM RDIO: "Oi has 67.1 million customers in Brazil, not 17 M as we incorrectly stated. Additionally, the cost of our Rdio Web access plan is 8.99 reais, not 8.90 reais."
Oi Rdio looks and acts just like Rdio available in North America except that it has a co-branded “Oi Rdio” logo and uses a slightly different background color. There's on demand access to 12 million songs as well as localized content from popular Brazilian artists through licensing deals with the major labels and local Brazil distributors and labels such as Som Livre, DeckDisk and OiMusica.
Pricing:
- Oi Rdio Web R$8.90 per month – Unlimited Web access
- Oi Rdio Unlimited R$14.90 – Unlimited Web and mobile including offline access
Launched in August 2010, Rdio was founded by Janus Friis, one of the creators of Skype and is funded by Atomico, Janus Friis through his investment entities, Skype and Mangrove Capital Partners.
