Filter Squad Gets $1.1M Funding, Their Discovr Music App Hits 1M Downloads
(UPDATED) Australian based mobile music startup Filter Squad has closed a $1.1 million seed funding round from Australia's Yuuwa Capital. It's Discovr music app, which is #1 in 28 countries in it's category, has been downloaded 1 million times and just added a version for Mac desktops.
MORE & A DEMO:
The Discovr app uses data visualization and music recommendations to provide a visual map of music. Enter an artist's name and users see and interactive map of artists and songs they might enjoy. The app is built on OSX Lion, but also supports backwards compatibility to Snow Leopard.
Filter Squad is part of a growing tech startup sector in Australia, but interestingly much of their growth is coming from Japan. “[The Japanese] are technophiles. They love technology and they have a strong musical love as well,” Filter Squad founder and chief executive David McKinney told VentureBeat. “There is a really great intersection of different [technology] cultures in Japan. [Discovr is] music meets apps meets mobile, and they seem to be gobbling it up.”
Im a huge fan of this application and what they are trying to achieve. I really want to get some of our artists on the service!
