Let The Streaming Wars Begin! Napster Touts 14 Million Track Catalog

image from www.google.com Get ready for announcements from MOG, Rdio, Rhapsody (who just announced a jump in subscribers) and others hoping to turn the spotlight away from Spotify.  This morning, just ahead of today's Spotify launch, competitor Napster announced that its U.S. catalog and reached 14 million tracks and 17 million in the UK and Germany. Most music streamers offer 8 – 10 million tracks. Napster's prices can also be a bit lower than some competitors.

With a contract, Napster plans fall to as low as $4.17 monthly and $8 for mobile use. That doesn't beat Spotify's free 10-20 hours a month of listening; and MOG is reportedly working on expanding its free trial.

Napster is owned by Best Buy and also offers purchase option with tracks as low as 69 cents.

  1. Wow… didn’t realize that Napster is still in the game… They are almost like the movie Wall street when Michael Douglas proclaim that he was sent to prison for things that are now legal to do… Napster was just ahead of its time

  2. Napster is the best kept secret for some reason. If you subscribe for a year, it’s $96 — that’s $8/month for web plus mobile (offline downloading, the works) making that the lowest priced full music subscription service. That’s also good for 3 devices. I tried Rhapsody but that’s not as good a deal (although their library is slightly better), and browsing is far better at Napster with their Billboard charts and thoughtfully made Playlists. Their radio is not great, but I use Slacker for that.
I’ll try Spotify if invited, but it would take a lot for me to switch from Napster.
