Yesterday, The Recording Academy announced that The Grammys would reduce the number of award categories from 109 to 78. Hardest hit are indie labels and artists who often benefit from recognition in many of the eliminated categories. Here Academy head Neil Portnow attempts to explain why:

We all know the why and we all know the impact. The Grammys for their part are a TV show, competing with reality tv. To expect anything more than that is silly.
