  1. I would suggest that a major reason that so many shopping carts are abandoned is becuase most sites force you to go half-way through the checkout process before giving you the final, total cost of the transaction. (CC fees, shipping, etc)
    So if you are trying to compare the final cost of the same item from multiple sites then you have to half-complete the checkout process at each one before you can compare apples with apples.

  2. Another reason for cart abandonment is the many U.S. sites where the only way you can tell if they ship outside the U.S. is to get to the Delivery Address screen and check if there is an input box for country or not.
    With the total and utter lack of ackowledgment of international customers it makes you wonder if they have a world map that shows only North America and just “here be dragons” everywhere else.
