YouTube Goes International
YouTube is adding localized versions of its video sharing website in nine new countries – Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK. Steve Chen, YouTube’s co-founder, commented, "We want to create a YouTube experience that is a local experience. It’s not just about translating, it’s also about creating content unique to certain countries."
YouTube is creating country-specific versions of the site and adding a new option on the top right of the homepage. This "country" option allows the user to switch between the new country sites and the original US site.
Random question here — does YouTube have to pay performance/mechanical royalties to publishers of artists whose videos play on the site?
Yes, they are supposed to.
