WMG Inks Deal To Give Motorola Exclusive Content. Why?
Cell phone maker Motorola and recording company Warner Music Group havesigned a deal to create music products for
the cell.
Motorola sill offer mobile music videos, ringtones, full-length songs,
wallpapers and exclusive content. The deal lays the foundation for an
ongoing plan to match Motorola’s mobile device marketing campaigns with
Warner’s artist promotions.
Wall Street couldn’t have cared less as Motorola’s shares fell 2.1% to $18.54 in
afternoon trading and shares of
Warner Music’s lost $.01 to $23.33.
We know why Motorola made the deal. Music helps differentiate a brand. But why WMG? Shouldn’t they be saving exclusive content for the iPhone? Or will there be so much "exclusive content" that the term becomes meaningless?
My guess was the mobile service will get exclusives on content that will get a wider release later. Also, it could be a good testing ground for Cordless Recordings.
