UK’s 7digital.com’s Top ’06 Sellers
The UK’s 7digital.com has announced it’s top selling downloads and
artists of 2006. Leading the singles chart is Leona Lewis with "A Moment Like This" which sold 571,253 copies. Top album is "Black
Holes And Revelations" by Muse and top artists of 2006 i
nclude Depeche Mode at #1, Sugababes at #5 and Coldplay at #14.
In addition, 7digital.com reported a 400%
increase in sales from 2005 and a half million people purchasing tracks over the past 12 months. Speaking about
this growth, Ben Drury, MD, 7digital.com says, "The digital music market has
exploded, particularly over the past six months, accounting for approximately
79% of all
single sales. We have seen Leona Lewis become the fastest selling
female artist of all time with over 100,000 digital sales in the first 48 hours."
Changes to UK chart rules as of January 1st should
also support future growth in digital music. Increasingly unsigned bands and indie labels can reach Top 40
positions without the release a physical single or the backing of a major label.
