Fanfare Magazine Offers Reviews For $’s
And we wonder why people don’t trust the media…
Classical music magazine Fanfare is openly offering reviews and interviews in exchange for ad $’s according to the Orange County Register. Defending the practice, the magazine claimed that they were just being honest about a practice that they claim most magazines already follow. Some former reviewers at the magazine claim that after assigned the piece the magazine never interfered with their opinions of the music.
But a choice had been made to give music with money attached space that could have been filled with something potentially more worthy. The music industry has always been an insider business favoring the "art" produced by associated companies and friends. But to Hypebot this goes to far…way too far. What do you think? Have you experienced this form of payola?
Actually I dont know about this one. If the magazine is upfront and clear to its readers, advertisers and potential reviewees I see no real issue. Theres the thing. NO MEDIA outlet is free from the pressure of making ad revnue based decisions. IF they take ads, advertisers factor into decisions. It rarely as transparent as FanFare’s Flegler has been, but wheather its free CD’s and open bar “listning parties” or cash both are forms of payment.
