UPDATE: Music Industry Efforts To Help Katrina Victims Intensifies
Major TV Networks Plan Katrina Relief Concert Special – “Shelter From The Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast” will air this Friday, September 9th, in a rare joint broadcast by all six major networks: CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC, the WB and UPN.
No details have been unveiled for the live, all-star charity concert, but plans call for an hour-long, commercial-free special featuring music performances and appearances by leading entertainers appealing for cash donations to the hurricane relief effort. The stars also will pay tribute to storm victims and rescue personnel who have saved thousands from floodwaters in the stricken region, organizers told Reuters news service. The simulcast, starting live at 8 p.m. for the eastern time zones, will be tape-delayed for the West Coast and mountain regions. The concert will also be made available to cable networks, radio stations and broadband Internet providers.
MTV Fund-Raiser September 10th – Another fund-raising concert will air on MTV on the following day, September 10th, featuring the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, Brian Wilson, Melissa Etheridge and the Neville Brothers, organizers announced on Friday.
OTHER EFFORTS –
Numerous other stars, including Mariah Carey, Julie Andrews, Pamela Anderson and George Lopez, will appear in a series of American Red Cross public service spots for hurricane relief airing on E! Entertainment Television starting on Saturday.
Industry vet Marcie Allen Caldwell of MAC Presents, who handles sponsorship for the annual Halloween weekend Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans, has teamed up with nine.com to provide relief supplies to hurricane victims stranded in Houston.
The companies hired two 53-foot trucks and stocked them with 70,000 bottles of water, 10,000 diapers, 5,000 Pop-Tarts, and 2,000 blankets. With the help of Clear Channel’s Jason Wright, they were able to contact the Houston Astrodome to arrange for a drop-off of supplies.
As for this year’s Voodoo Music Experience, Caldwell said that all is under control. “The festival is definitely going to happen! Steve Rehage is currently reviewing the proposals from different cities who are interested in hosting the event,” she said. “Hope to see everyone Halloween weekend!”
Singer Macy Gray Volunteers At Astrodome – According to the Associated Press, R&B singer Macy Gray went to Houston specifically to help refugees from the flooding in New Orleans.
"I just really wanted to help out," Gray said after spending Saturday handing out clothes and toiletries in the Astrodome. "I think the most important thing to them is their futures. They are here, and they have gotten out of that disaster but it is, like, now what? Because they can’t live like that forever." …The Grammy winner was able to lift the refugees’ spirits …"It is very humbling, but I loved every second of it," Gray said. "It was really gratifying and I had a great time."
