AOL, Concert Promoters AEG, and XM Join In Live Entertainment Venture
According to Digital Music News: "Live8…re-cast AOL and online media delivery in a new light, while setting live streaming records. Now, the event has fueled a new joint venture between AOL, live entertainment presenter AEG, and XM Satellite Radio. The new partnership, called Network Live, will expand the in-person concert experience to the web, satellite radio, and eventually wireless, HDTV, VOD and other platforms. The new group will be headed by Kevin Wall, who served as executive producer of the Live8 event."
"The group will tip the balance in the live concert business tremendously…"
"…Network Live will carry the same sort of licensing power into future events, though a slate of performances is yet to be announced. "We will eventually look at VOD, wireless, and global partnerships", Kevin Wall said at an early afternoon conference call Tuesday, adding that "the basic model is a licensing model," while noting that "advertisers can be layered on top of that". Overall, the group is thinking big, with AEG chief Thomas Leiweke pointing to "a 24-hour platform for live entertainment 7 days a week, 365 days a year". That ambition is likely to alter the live experience for consumers, while also bringing more money into the space."
HYPEBOT: Expect more announcements like this involving the likes of Clear Channel, Yahoo (these two are already partnering with online ads and promotion for concerts), MSN, and others. These developments could totally change the concert business/performance model by adding several additional revenue streams.
