MUSIC PIRACY IS NOT THE END OF MUSIC

Usatoday_1USA Today’s Kevin Maney has written a column that tries to make the point that rampant piracy does not mean musicians and music are doomed. Maney uses China as the basis for his theory. In China bootleg CDs, which are produced and packaged with as much professionalism as legitimate retail copies, outsell their legal counterparts.  And yet, China has just as many music superstars as elsewhere.  Maney also cites the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn, who earned all of $0.000007 for each of the 500,000 copies of his solo album Arista sold in the early ‘90s, but who now makes a solid living by touring and giving away MP3s on his web site.
