Believe, TuneCore Artists Can Opt Into Spotify’s AI Remix Tool

The two platforms' new licensing agreement will let participating artists earn royalties from AI-powered fan remixes and covers — artists choose to opt in.

The agreement announced October 20 covers Spotify’s upcoming tool for creating AI-powered reinterpretations of existing songs. Spotify plans to offer the tool as a paid add-on for Premium subscribers, with streams generating royalties for participating artists and rights holders.

The companies say the tool is designed for remixes and covers rather than entirely new works. Each remix will link back to the original track and artist, giving listeners a route to the music behind the fan-created version.

For independent artists, the pitch combines a potential new income source with a way to participate in fan remix culture while retaining a say over whether their music is included.

Artists Get Two Separate Opt-In Decisions

Believe and TuneCore will use a two-step consent process. Artists and labels first decide whether they want to be considered for AI-related programs. Those who opt in will then receive information about the Spotify partnership and make a separate decision about participating.

Agreeing to hear about AI opportunities does not automatically enroll an artist in Spotify’s remix tool.

The companies frame the agreement around Believe’s four responsible AI principles: consent, control, compensation and transparency. They also point to efforts to address spam, impersonation and misleading AI content on streaming platforms.

The Royalty Details Still Matter

Fan-made versions of songs already circulate widely online, often without payment to the original creators. Spotify and Believe are proposing a licensed route that could turn some of that activity into revenue and discovery.

But the announcement does not specify a launch date, the subscriber add-on price, royalty rates or how revenue will be divided.

Those details will help artists assess the opportunity. Voluntary participation and links to the original recording establish part of the framework; the financial terms and available controls will determine how useful it becomes for independent music businesses.
