SXSW cuts two days: Festival Issues Statement
SXSW will be getting two days shorter in 2026, the festival has officially confirmed. Instead of being spread over 9 days, all three SXSW festivals – Interactive, Film & TV and Music – will run concurrently over 7 days.
SXSW cuts two days
Rumors flew on Monday morning that SXSW Music would be cut by two days in 2026
The Austin American Statesman reported that the 2025 festival featured 1,015 acts, down from 1,200 in 2024 and 2,000 at the peak around 2015. Some of this year’s biggest showcases reportedly failed to sell out and SXSW had to use free RSVPs to try to fill showcases for rising stars like Benson Boone and Megan Moroney.
But as the festival confirmed on Monday afternoon at seven days instead of nine, its SXSW overall that’s getting shorter, not SXSW Music.

SXSW issues statement
“We are really excited about the plans for SXSW 2026. With the Austin Convention Center closing down for three years, we believe it’s a great opportunity to put new ideas into action.
A shorter SX gives attendees more of a chance to be here for the entire run. With the Conference, Film & TV Festival, and Music Festival all taking place concurrently over seven days, everyone will have the chance to experience the whole of SXSW.
This gives music fans an opportunity to enjoy seven nights of showcases instead of the six we’ve had for several years. It also allows us to continue the work the Music Festival programmers have done over the last decade in paring down the numbers of showcasing artists while spreading the shows out over a greater part of the event. This creates a more curated experience for attendees and artists while retaining the discovery that the music festival is known for.
We also know that post-pandemic attendees want more personalized experiences, and we’re excited to explore new ways to bring people together.”
Half price festival passes are already on sale for March 12 to 18, 2026 including a music option.
Shorter Trips and Less SXSW Media Coverage
Spin aside, the Austin Convention Center closure may not be the only reason that SXSW is cutting back on days
In recent years, more and more music industry professionals have started to come early to be part of SXSW Tech and Film events and gone home on Thursday or Friday when most of the panels and business events are done.
SXSW has also become less of a major media event, with dwindling coverage as budgets get cut as well as perhaps because a competitor – Penske Media (Billboard, Rolling Stone, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Vibe, Deadline and more) – own and control the festival.
