If you display playlists on your official artist profile on Spotify, you want those playlists to make an impression. And that means a good playlist name, a great theme, and striking cover artwork! Otherwise no one is going to to be enticed to listen, right?
Playlist covers run the gamut. On the one extreme is that awful default playlist “cover” — ya know, where Spotify just grabs four pieces of cover artwork from the added tracks, and makes a little collage?
On the other extreme is you having to go into Photoshop or Canva, and spending minutes or hours designing your own original playlist cover artwork.
Can’t there be something in the middle? Now there is! I just tried it out for one of my own playlists, and it literally took 2 minutes.
Spotify’s custom playlist cover generator
Spotify has enabled a feature for users where you can generate custom playlist covers within the Spotify app. And to clarify, I’m not talking about Spotify for Artists here. This is a feature for ANYONE who makes and shares playlists, so you want to open Spotify itself.
Spotify explains:
Rolling out in beta on the Spotify mobile app today, the new feature offers both Free and Premium users the ability to create their own cover art with unique images, colors and text effects, graphic elements, and more, allowing them to make their music playlists more unique and personalized than ever before.
How to create custom covers for your Spotify playlists:
- Make sure you have the latest version of Spotify on mobile
- Open Spotify
- Go to a playlist you’ve already created
- Tap the ellipses
- Select “Create cover art”
You’ll then have a number of design options. It’s time to:
- Choose a color background and gradient
- Upload a photo
- Customize the text
- Add effects or image masking
- Browse the fun stickers
- And then share your new playlist cover
For some examples and inspiration, check out Spotify’s announcement page.
What do you think? Will you use it? Is this feature helpful?
You may still want to design your own covers from scratch for high-priority playlists. But if you’re an artist who creates multiple playlists (for each show on a tour, for instance) this new Spotify tool should be a big time-saver!
