EMI TO BUY WIND-UP FOR $125 MILLION?
Just in case you thought major labels had finall gotten smarter about spending big money, rumors are rampant that EMI is buying indy Wind-Up for $125 million.
Don’t get us wrong here, Wind-Up is a smart and creative label, but $125 million?
Here is music commentator Bob lefsetz’s take:
"…If ANYTHING should happen here, Wind-Up should buy EMI!"
"But, as the old cliche states, EVERYTHING’S for sale. It’s just a matter of price. Who WOULDN’T take $125 million for a company with only two hit acts."
"…This demonstrates that EMI doesn’t get it. It’s about REPLICATING the Wind-Up model, not BUYING IT! But EMI is too caught up in short term quarterly Wall Street cycles. It’s got no long term outlook. Hell, blaming your lousy quarter on the slippage of release dates of Coldplay and Gorillaz seems to indicate you ONLY have Coldplay and Gorillaz."
"Then again, if they buy Wind-Up, they can mess with the numbers one more time…"
