Sony Fails To Connect With Downloads

Sony_1Sony’s Connect download service has only captured a paltry 3% of the download market and now division head Phil Wiser is jumoing from the sinking ship.  Connect shot itself in the foot at launch by trying to introduce its own propriatary digital rights software incompatible with other devices. And unlike Apple, Sony failed to deliver an elegeant, hip and compatible companion device like the iPod.

These failures underscore Sony’s ongoing problems in a music space it once dominated with the incredibly successful Walkman line.

  1. They should put a serious Japanese engineer on top in their upper echelon leadership again and ditch the stupid TV execs and MBAs. They are bad news for a tech company.
Sony is getting eaten alive left and right. In 3 years there won’t be anything left if that clueless brit dude is still in charge.
Samsung and Chinese manufacturers are running around them in Asia. Sony could probably lost the console battle against MSFT/Nintendo soon.
and Apple is stomping them mercilessly in music business.
Sony doesn’t make anything people want to buy anymore. Camera, portable HiFi, movies, music, etc.
They produce the worst possible combintion from all those mergers.
I wonder how soon Sony will sell their music division. I mean, Apple makes money hands over fist without having music division. While Sony is losing every thing because the two divisions keep stepping on each other toes.

  2. I see a lot of people are down on Sony, but for the record revenue and operating income were up in 2005, and net income was slightly down from the previous year. The stock is closer to its 52-week high that its 52-week low. Things aren’t nearly as grim as they’re being portrayed. This is a huge company. Connect is an immaterial speck on the income statement, Sony BMG is fairly healthy (anybody see the Dixie Chicks sales?) and besides, the US market isn’t the entire picture. Given all this, an absolute statement like “Sony is losing everything” makes no sense whatsoever.

It’s VERY grim Glenn. It’s make or break time for Sony. Either they make it this next 2-3 years, or they are a goner as we know it now.
The console war alone will cost them massive amount of cash and the PSP2 is aging. The next generation is nowhere near ready.
Sony vs Music business? They have nobody that the young crowd wants in their rooster.
Another thing, as the Yen climbs and US economy sinks, Sony gonna suffer the most.
The dude in charge doesn’t have a clue. (ie. he is really stupid. really really …..REALLLY VERY STUPID.)
Trust me Glenn, Sony won’t last another 5 years if things doesn’t change pronto.
    You heard it here first.
