Opposing Viewpoints Emerge As Congress Debates New Digital Law

A draft proposal of a new law that would create a blanket licensing process for clearing mechanical sound recordings has passed muster before a US House panel. The measure which sounds innocuous enough has the support of a number of industry trade groups.

Efflogo_2But a number of consumer groups, satellite radio providers and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have come out strongly against it.  "The law implies that licenses from copyright holders are needed for every digital copy made in the transmission of digital media — including cached copies on servers or on your hard drive, and even temporary copies in RAM," the EFF noted.
