The 10 Commandments Of Music 2.0

Moses

  1. Thou Shalt Not Worship False Prophets – Neither a record deal or auto-tune are your saviors.
  2. Thou Shalt Worship Only One God – He (or she) is called The Fan.
  3. Thou Shalt Giveaway Free Music – Like Jesus and the loaf of bread, give your flock a gift that multiplies as they pass it around.
  4. Thou Shalt Not Steal – Borrowing a beat is one thing, but stealing…
  5. Thou Shalt Blog – Your flock wants to know what you're doing.
  6. Thou Shalt Create Profiles – Wherever your flock may go, you must be there.
  7. Thou Shalt Upload Photos -  Staged, unstaged, backstage, from the stage and at every stage of a project.
  8. Thou Shalt Upload Videos – Longs Ones. Shorts Ones. Tall ones…you get the idea.
  9. Thou Shalt Share Thy Bounty. Share gigs. Share ideas. Share with your fans.
  10. Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You – You meet the same people on the way down that you did on the way up.
Do you have an 11th Commandment?

  1. Thou Shalt Not Butcher Your Album just to have an exclusive bonus track for iTunes. Quasi-monopolists are only your friend as long as they benefit greatly from it, so you better beware

  2. Thou shall post your bio and music links for FREE on Muzlink.com because you are in so many places on the web, because it is artist owned and operated, because it is progressive and world wide, because it is simple to update and user friendly for both artists and fans, because it IS music 2.0 on the web, because it is marketing and promotion of music for FREE.
No matter where you go, new fans can discover you and tell fans where to buy and see your music to the artists best advantage… and did I say Muzlink.com is FREE to artists and fans? Of course I did. Sign Up! further….

  3. 11 No, for the ten thousandth time, Steve Jobs does not know Jesus, so no, I won’t ask him to ‘put in a good word’ for you.
12 Thou shalt not believe everything in the Gospel of Pitchfork.

  4. Thou shalt not give up on recording in analog or listening to records in full (There are ever-changing online branding opportunities in Music 2.0, but how many are making us better musicians?)

  5. Thou shalt read hypebot, because it is full of awesome stuff.
Also, I like Chris’ comment. Analog FTW. Albums FTW. New Hype Music 2.0 That Really Does Musicians More Harm Than Good FTL.

  6. Love the ROCK with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. Delight yourself in the ROCK and it will give you the desires of your heart.

  7. Thou shalt remember that your music’s value comes from the fact that it is a communication of your very self.

  8. These are all pretty funny. When Art collides with the Music Business (which is 90% business and 10% music), the first things to go, in this order are: 1) the fan, 2) the artist, 3) the promoter. If all artists were “forced” by “the market” to be real, to be genuine, to produce music from their hearts – and then be forced to play for what they’re worth and NOT what some agent tells a promoter they’re worth – for a ticket price THE FAN determines … what a wonderful world it would be. Check out the Corey Smith phenomenon: Genuine artist + real talent + grassroots care for his fans + fan-driven ticket prices + playing for what he’s worth in all markets = $4 million ticket revenues over 2 years. Happy artist, happy fans, thrilled promoters. (Oh, there’s an agent in there, too, but who cares? He works for the artist and THEY work for the fans.)

  9. Great list. One on there I am already putting to use is the video uploading. I mainly create short videos that lead to my website. Then I try to upload to as many places as possible. I get the best results from posting video free to http://www.Adwido.com they also help run a targeted keyword campaign to boost traffic from search engines.

  10. 11.
Thou shalt not believe all the HYPE one reads online for 95% of all artists online are making no money and going NOWHERE

  11. 11. Thou shall remember that GOOD music is where the answer is found.
    12. Thou shall not make thine image into that of a rock star.
