‘Mission Impossible’ Still #1 After Weekend 2 Box Office
Tom Cruise and "Mission Impossible – Fallout” from Paramount held on to the to the top spot in movie theaters this weekend. The franchise's sixth installment which features Tom Cruise performing his own stunts, generated $35M in North American theaters and $111M worldwide, according to estimates compiled by comScore.
“Mission Impossible” bested a trio of newcomers, which included Walt Disney’s live-action Winnie the Pooh redux “Christopher Robin” which opened in second place with $25 million and Lionsgate’s comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me” which features the allure of Mila Kunis.
“Christopher Robin” which tells the story of a middle-aged version of the titular character who reunites with his childhood friend, fell short of the $31.5 million opening predicted by Box Office Pro. Starring Ewan McGregor, the film was directed by Marc Forster, whose past entries include “Monster’s Ball,” “Quantum of Solace,” and The Kite Runner.”
Internationally, “Hello Mr. Billionaire” which a Chinese film reprises the 1985 Richard Pryor classic “Brewster’s Millions” (we’re up to seven iterations of this film now) continued to chug along merrily and earned $64.5M over the weekend, according to comScore.
