Best Buy Quietly Launches iTunes Match Style Mobile Cloud Music Service
Best Buy has quietly launched a cloud music service; and like Apple's announced iTunes Match, this licensed music service works on a scan and match basis, avoiding large transfer of files to the cloud. The retail giant has not formally announced the service, but a Best Buy Music Cloud app can already be downloaded at Google’s Android store.
The Best Buy Music Cloud service is powered by California based Catch Media and is available for mobile devices including RIM's BlackBerry and Android smartphones, Catch CEO Yaacov Ben-Yaacov told Businessweek. It's Catch who made the licensing deals for Music Cloud, including agreements with major record labels, according to Ben-Yaacov.
