Forget Nashville, NYC & LA Buy More Country Music [INFOGRAPHIC]
New York City is the #1 market for country album sales, according to Nielsen. NYC beat even Nashville when looking at the number of albums sold. Nashville came in at #6, while the top 3 was rounded out by LA and Dallas-Fort Worth. New York owes its top spot more to population than popularity. When looking at music sales by genre, the South and Midwest stayed true to their country roots. This too date, 31.8 million physical and digital country albums have been sold nationwide. INFOGRAPHIC:
Probably because everyone gets the records for free in Nashville.
Sales volume: NYC and LA are roughly an order of magnitude bigger than Nashville, measuring metro area populations. (Duh.)
The sales volume chart closely parallels the Metro Area Population chart: the divergences are Nashville (#38 metro area, but #6 in country sales volume) and Philadelphia (#5 metro area, but falls to #10 country sales volume). Otherwise, a market’s position on the Country Volume chart is within 1 of the position on the Metro Statistical Area chart.
The percentage chart is much more fascinating, showing the regional underpinnings of the field.
