Creative Music Videos: Gotye’s Somebodies, MysteryGuitarMan x Excel, Ellie Goulding x Instagram
Though most of my roundups of creative music videos and marketing focus on software and web apps, this edition includes Gotye's mashup of some of the many covers of "Somebody That I Used to Know." In addition, you'll find MysteryGuitarMan's "Stop-Motion Excel," a video created using spreadsheet software, and Ellie Goulding's "Anything Could Happen" featuring Instagram pics from fans.
Gotye – Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra
Inspired by Kutiman's awesome work and the overwhelming deluge of covers for his song Somebody That I Used To Know Gotye created this "orchestral" mashup.
He describes what he did on YouTube:
"All audio and video in Somebodies is from the YouTube user videos featured, each of them a cover or parody of Somebody That I Used To Know. No extra sounds were added to the mix, but I used some EQ, filtering, pitch-shifting and time-stretching to make the music."
"I used KeepVid.com to download the YouTube videos, Ableton Live for audio stretching, pitch-shifting and the initial video editing, and Adobe's After Effects to put the final video together."
Source videos are listed here. Nice way to build on widespread interest in one's song.
MysteryGuitarMan – Stop-Motion Excel
MysteryGuitarMan recently released a music video created using Excel spreadsheet software:
"To create the clip, MysteryGuitarMan…filmed himself performing in front of a green screen, then had the green part removed in Adobe After Effects. Each frame was then turned into a mosaic that was used as a template to make each spreadsheet page — 730 frames total…Once all the frames were done, they were strung together into a single animation."
For more on the process check out this making of video.
Ellie Goulding – Anything Could Happen
Ellie Goulding turned to her fans for Instragram pics to use in the above video for Anything Could Happen, a single off her upcoming album Halcyon.
Supposedly it uses 1200 Instagram photos. Fortunately bloggers aren't required to verify anything cause I ain't counting them!
Obviously not the first but still a nice example of using Instagram to involve one's fans while creating a video that has a quirky, personal edge.
