American Music Awards Ratings Hit All Time Low
Nielsen ratings for the American Music Awards broadcast on Tuesday night slipped to an all-time low. The three-hour show drew a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49, with 6.5 million viewers tuning in on ABC. NBC's The Voice, pulled more than 9 million viewers and CBS crime drama NCIS scored more than 12 million viewers.
According to Variety, the AMAs viewership was down by 25% in its key demographic, and down by 29% in total viewers from last year’s broadcast.
The declines came in spite of a shift in the show’s time slot, which saw the AMAs move from the highly competitive Sunday night to Tuesday for the first time in more than a decade.
The AMAs are not alone. Numerous award shows have seen declining ratings in recent years. Just a month ago, the Emmys also hit an all-time low, while the Grammy Awards broadcast in January also suffered reached a nadir with its audience when ratings slide by more than 24% from the previous year.
