Music Publishing News Weekly Roundup 4.25.14: ASCAP Pop Awards, “I Create Music” Expo, Record Store Day & More

28th+Annual+ASCAP+Pop+Music+Awards+Show+V2o0pkiplyal-300x225The 31st annual ASCAP Pop Awards were held Wednesday, April 23rd at The Loews Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. This event honored the songwriters and publishers behind this year’s most performed ASCAP songs on the pop charts. Some of the highlights included Tom Petty being honored with the ASCAP Founders Award, Fun honored with the ASCAP Vanguard Award, and Max Martin awarded the fourth consecutive ASCAP Pop Music Songwriter of The Year Award. There were also unique performances from Greg Holden, writer of Phillip Phillip’s hit “Home”, and Aloe Blacc and Michael Einziger, writer’s of Avicii’s hit “Wake Me Up”. The 9th annual ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO is being held this week from April 24th – 26th in Los Angeles, CA. The music conference includes over 100 panelists from industry professionals including keynote speeches from ASCAP President Paul Williams, Producer Dr. Luke of Prescription Songs, and production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Steven Lewis. There will also be interactive panels with Desmund Child hosted by actor John Stamos and performances by writers Shane McAnally, Beth Orton, and Julie Frost.

The 8th annual Record Store day was held Saturday, April 18th. Many record store’s around the country experienced a spike in sales as special reissues were released coupled with unique performances. Highlights include Jack White’s performance at Third Man Records in Nashville, TN supporting his vinyl release for “Lazaretto”. The band Sunny Day Real Estate also released their first recordings in over 12 years with their comeback release “Lifton Witch”.
