Does Anyone Actually Discover Music On Twitter?
Guest Post by Chris Robley on The DIY Musician Blog
Hip hop blogger Mike Trampe wrote an interesting article you might want to check out about online music promotion called “5 Things Rappers Shouldn’t Be Doing on Social Media.” It’s all good stuff, but the part that really made me think was this:
STOP sending your music links to people on on twitter (unless they asked), especially celebrities and industry vets. I get shown new music all the time from friends, family and industry colleagues. You know the first question I ask them? “How did you find out about the artist.” And not ONE TIME have they said from being “sent” a music link on twitter. People in general, but especially busy industry people do not have the time to listen to all the music being sent to them via twitter mentions. So why waste the time to send your music to a bunch of random people hoping they click it? That’s not promoting, marketing or social media. That’s one word. SPAMMING. Stop being lazy, do your research and learn how to market your music properly. Google is free, libraries are free, knowledge is free. Educate yourselves or get left behind.
Do you think Trampe is right? How useful is Twitter for getting the attention of the press, bookers, or labels? Or should you be using Twitter to stay in touch with your EXISTING fanbase? Let us know in the comments below.
I don’t think its that bad. How else can you get heard? Facebook blocks most of your posts unless you pay them so there’s not really many other free choices to make it out to the masses.
I agree with soundtweaker social media was created to share your stuff. Tweeting to a celebrity doesn’t mean were harassing them there could be a vip who follows them that might discover that talent.
I disagree. While yes it is dumb to spam people all the time, that’s the only option out there. I get more of a turn around on SoundCloud by just purely following people. They see how many followers I have and follow back by default. That’s the biggest problem with today. I have to have a Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Instagram, YouTube, Pintrest, Vine, Snapchat, Tumblr, and more just to get noticed. There isn’t a one stop shop where I can find artists, music, and promote myself. Revolt TV is the one leading the charge with this. The game is who can monetize music content first and then they will be the Facebook of music. So while yes it is dumb to just send out links to SoundCloud and what not, that’s our only option as aspiring musicians. So until someone comes up with 1 app that does it all then I’m going to continue to do whatever gets me the most results.
