Amazon Prime Music Adds Lots Of Songs. Let's Hope They Stop There!

Octopus-tattoo-design-danielle-blueToday Amazon announced the addition of "hundreds of thousands of songs and hundreds of new, expert-programmed Prime Playlists to the Prime Music catalog." Obviously this isn't the same as licensing current hits from the major labels but you can already see it turning the tide in some of today's press coverage. But even with major label licensing Amazon won't win by building a superior product. In fact, I don't see them ever being the top music streaming service. Yet I do expect them to create a great deal of pain as they continue their march to dominate the 21st Century.

Spotify And The Dark Arts

Harry-potter-bookHey, my name's Alex Frecon. I rap (decently) I blog (above average) and I tweet (unsatisfactorily.) Check me out.

When Coldplay announced they weren’t releasing their album on Spotify a few months back, it got me thinking; I’ve been streaming music for a couple of years now and I’ve never thought about how this is affecting everyone. Is this service really that beneficial to the music industry? Is it beneficial to me as an artist? While it does offer up a chance to be discovered by new fans, the fact that it’s free and so easy to use lends to more serious consequences, like substituting actual album sales. So much so, that I think free streaming services like Pandora and Spotify represent the most recent dagger into the filleted heart of the record industry.

How To Create A Great Music Video

Music-videoBy Mike Walbert from the Sonicbids Blog.

A good music video is one that’s effective in bringing new life and energy to a song. They should be made to entertain your audience. To really capture people’s attention, they should be fun, funny, creative, unique and/or energetic – so that means don't just stand in front of a camera and sing your song or rap your lines. You want people to watch the whole video (which isn't easy these days) and share it with friends. Here’s how to do it as an independent artist.

The Eroding Prospects For Rock Cover Bands

Steve-brown-trixterTimes are tough for rock cover bands. The Wall Street Journal takes a look at their plight and finds that interest is dwindling for bands playing music that used to be popular. While closer industry watchers may take a different view, I saw indie rock killing cover bands in the 80s when the indie stance of originality entered the Top 40. Rock moved on. Cover bands did not. And to make matters worse, even the core baby boomer audience seems to be losing interest.

8 Steps To Building Your Personal Music Brand

Personal-brandNeil Patel freely shares his "Complete Guide To Building Your Personal Brand" which mixes notions of business image and personal identity in a manner that's quite relevant to musicians. Though some musicians would prefer to take a haphazardly organic approach to brand building that just leaves it up to others to decide who you are. But building your brand doesn't have to be a superficial process and Patel advocates the perspective that, "your personal brand is what separates you from everyone else in the world."

Sparkplug Helps Musicians Rent Gear and Space From Each Other [Updated]

Sparkplug-logoSparkplug is a new site and service that facilitates musicians renting gear and space from each other. But they go beyond just a Craiglist-like listing to add a system with such features as clear procedures, deposits and id verification. It's potentially a great service but, in what I think is a simple oversight, you can't figure out who the people running the site might be which kind of contradicts their trust-building features.

How Some Managers and Agents Benefit From Piracy and Low-Paying Streaming Music

Trichordist_logo_400x400By David Lowery of The Trichordist.

Seems like every six months or so I have friends forward me an article or interview with a manager or agent extolling the virtues of streaming (and sometimes even piracy.) Usually this comes with some note that reads something like this “Agent/Manager X thinks streaming/piracy is a good thing, Why don’t you?” I am always perplexed by this. Of course some managers and agents love streaming and piracy! Less revenue from recorded music means their artists must play more and more live shows to make up the difference. I thought everyone knew this.
