De La Soul Releasing Entire Discography Free Today

De-la-soulLinking out to a news piece on RollingStone.com, De La Soul's official site states: "Check back on Valentine's Day at 11 AM EST for some de la love!" As it turns out, they're releasing their back catalog for free partly due to difficulty clearing their innovative samples. It's another element that seems to be slowing their transition to the contemporary scene but, according to them, self-criticism may be as big a problem.

SongAmpr Leverages Valentine's Day To Add Song Dedications As A Permanent Feature

Rebel-electrics-valentines-teeTypically a small feature addition is not something I would write about at Hypebot. But SongAmpr's new Dedicate feature, which they describe as the "Dedicate App," offers some snack food for thought. For one thing, it's a nice play off Valentine's Day that isn't limited to the holiday but has special resonance for the holiday. For another, it was the only Valentine's Day pitch I got except for a playlist and playlists are a dime a dozen these days.

7 Ways A Virtual Assistant Can Create Your Best YouTube Trailer

ImagesLet's face it. We all have a list of things we aspire to have time or make the time to do. Some of those things have been on that list for days, weeks, months, maybe even years. Wouldn't it be nice to have a virtual assistant who helps check things off that list? Absolutely.

Fluence Streamlines The Music Feedback Process

Fluence-app-logoGetting feedback for your music can be an iffy proposition. Friends often base feedback on the relationship more so than the music. Strangers may not have an incentive to listen. While the internet has improved the situation in some respects, the process can be pretty hit or miss. Fluence is a new startup that's attempting to tackle that problem and they appear to be off to a good start.

The Emerging Age Of The Streaming DJ

StreamingdjscomTwo examples of streaming DJs have come my way of late. You may well have heard of the Pacemaker iPad app that connects to Spotify to stream songs for dj'ing. It's gotten quite a bit of well-deserved attention. From a different angle, Streaming DJs is a service that connects you with DJs who will play your party via a streaming internet connection. Both reflect developments in streaming that indicate where we're going though both will also be limited by the quality of one's internet connection.

How To Get Through To Busy Music Industry Writers

Busy-krnlpanik-flickrI've previously written about connecting with music bloggers for music coverage as have many writers over the years. If you follow tech blogs you'll periodically see posts about getting your startup covered often from writers explaining what they want to see. But I haven't seen anything specific on getting music industry writers' attention. So here are some of my thoughts on so doing whether you're with a music tech startup, offer business services or are a DIY musician who feels you should get some biz coverage for your approach.

Why I Blacklisted 100+ PR Companies Today

image from www.hypebot.comToday I declared all email from 100+ PR companies spam, and sadly, this is becoming an annual event

As regular readers know, Hypebot is about the business of music in all its forms - music and technology, the rise of a new music industry, direct to fan marketing, d.i.y. and more. We can't feature every music tech startup or great idea that crosses our inbox, but we cover as many as our resources allow. We do NOT write about music.

So why then, is my inbox filled with press releases and pleas from bands asking Hypebot to feature their release or latest video? Sadly, the answer is very simple.

Digital Radio's Strong Growth To Continue, Say New Report [STATS]

volume controlA new eMarketer study estimates there will be 159.8 million digital radio listeners by the end of 2014, and will grow to 183.4 million in 2018. How The Musical Tastes Of Women And Men Differ [CHART]

Men-mars-women-venusFrom The Echo Nest blog.

"Men are from Mars and women are from Venus," as a book famously claimed.

Both of these genders agree, however, that the music of Bruno Mars is well worth a listen — it’s just about every other artist they seem to disagree on.

By analyzing the listening behavior of 200,000 anonymous music fans across a variety of services (self-reported as male or female), The Echo Nest director of developer platform Paul Lamere has drawn fascinating observations about the music, generally speaking, that men and women like to listen to.

How To Get Signed To A Major Label and Build Your Indie Career When They Drop You

Spose-Spose, an indie rapper from Portland, had a brief major label experience that did not end well. Except that it did. By that I mean, he saw that the major labels weren't for him, got dropped and then turned their publicity for what they thought would be a easily manipulated act into a way of reaching core fans. Now he's earning a solid living without having to give up almost everything about hip hop that he loves.

The Most Sampled Artists Of All Time [CHART]

image from content.bandzoogle.comHip Hop, along with most modern music, relies heavily on the work of others. Whether its a subconscious influence or a directly sampled snippet, music is a collaborative art. That's true even when the parties involved have never met each other. “No idea’s original, there’s nothing new under the sun. It’s never what you do, but how it’s done,” wrote Nas. This chart from WhoSampled shows the most sampled artist of modern times:

SXSW Is Coming And You Forgot: A 10 Item Checklist

Kosha-dillz-awkward-in-a-good-wayBy indie rapper Kosha Dillz (@koshadillz).

I'll be honest with you guys. I'm writing this because I forgot about SXSW but I figure at least a few thousand of us did or we didn't want to put the effort in without getting results, so we decided to brush it off and say mehhh…

Not only is SXSW an essential part of my career that landed me in a video game (NBA 2k11) and put me on tour with Snoop Dogg in Europe, but it's that time of year when I get to rejoice with all my music friends, make new ones and feed my sticker and poster addiction with hundreds and thousands of posters on telephone poles until they fall down.

DIY Music Marketing With Messaging Stickers and Emoticons

Cubie-logoMessaging apps are continuing to grow and build ever stronger and more lucrative combinations of services. That means they're going to be around for awhile. Though we've seen examples of marketing on messaging apps from big stars like Paul McCartney, Psy and One Direction, I've yet to see any coverage of what DIY and indie musicians are doing or could do. But the inevitable is occuring. Stickers and emoticons are going UGC (user-generated content) and that creates an opening for DIY viral growth on messaging apps.
