App Annie Report Reveals Importance Of Mobile Apps For Digital Music Revenue

Worldwide-music-app-spendToday app store analytics service App Annie and global market research firm IHS released the "Digital Content Report 2013." The report documents growing digital content revenue and reveals that mobile apps are now driving growth in the global digital content market with games leading the way. Music apps saw consumer spend rise a dramatic 77% from 2012 to 2013 but much of the related sales action occurred via other channels to avoid hefty app store fees. Streaming music and discovery apps led downloads while paid apps included more content creation tools.

Marty Thau, NY Dolls Manager and Red Star Records Founder Passes

A major figure in the early NYC punk scene, discovered and managed The New York Dolls, as well as signed bands such as The Fleshtones, Suicide and The Real Kids to his label Red Star Records.

Warner Music Group Announces New Shazam Powered Label, Marketing Alliance

Spotify, Pandora and Other Streaming Music Services Will Never Be Profitable, Says Study

moneySubscription music services like Spotify and Pandora are on track to double by 2017, according to a new study, but they will never turn a profit. The barrier to profitability for steaming music, according to the analysis, is the 60-70% of revenue each service pays to labels, publishers and artists.

Alt Marketing: Chromeo's Fake Craigslist Ad, Submerging Walkmans In Water Bottles

Submersible-walkmanAlternative music marketing concepts are often more interesting for the concept than the reality. For instance, announcing your new album with a Craigslist ad sounds underground and edgy but I find it unlikely that Chromeo got coverage without directly promoting that ad to writers. And though Sony really did put a bunch of their Walkmans into water bottles and display them in a dispensing machine that doesn't mean they were targeting a niche swimming market as claimed in the video below.

Both Donovan and the Kinks have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year's writers beat out some major acts also up for nomination including Madonna, John Mellencamp, Sade, Nile Rodgers, and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The writers will be inducted at the Marriot Marquis hotel in New York in June 2014.
