Connect With The Finnish Music Tech Startup Scene

Finnish-music-startups-logoMusic tech is a global phenomenon and, as Hypebot readers well know, it is in no way limited to streaming music services like Deezer or Earbits. This month Visionist launched an English language edition of the Finnish Music Startups collective's newsletter. The collective is a free-to-join organization intended, at least in part, to raise the profile of Finnish music tech startups. Currently 37 startups are listed on their page in English and they represent a wide range of approaches and products.

Music Biz Association Announces Agenda For May 6-8 Convention

Labels Allege Grooveshark Destroyed Evidence, Required That Employees Infringe

image from www.intellectualpropertynews.comThe major labels vs. Grooveshark legal battle is heating with the RIAA led consortium now asking the court to grant a summary judgement against  parent company Escape Media along with founders Sam Tarantino and Joshua Greenberg.  “By any objective measure, Grooveshark is a linear descendant of infringing music services such as Napster, Grokster, and LimeWire, all shuttered by federal courts for large-scale copyright infringement,” label lawyers wrote the court, alongside new damaging evidence against the music streamer.

SoundFocus Raises $1.7M To Improve Music Fidelity

soundforceStartup SoundFocus has just raised $1.7 to improve the listening experience, particularly those with hearing loss. A member of the Y Combinator class of 2013,  investors in this round include Kapor Capital (Lotus and EFF Co-Founder Mitch Kapor’s fund), Y-Combinator, Greg Badros, Ovo Fund, RTA Capital, Vegas Tech Fund, Garry Tan, Alexis Ohanian, and Harj Taggar.  The company launched it first app late in 2013.

CMT Artists Release Mobile App For Underserved Country Music Market

Today CMT Artists released CMT Artists_AppHome_iPhone_5s a new iOS app to provide a mobile version of the site with all its country music content including photos, music videos and streaming tracks. It's similar to the MTV Artists app with one big difference. According to Matt Seigel, VP of Music Strategy for Viacom, in comparison with other popular music categories country music is underserved online and on mobile. Quick take: it's a nice app that's going to help fill the gap quite solidly.

Why Facebook Paid $16 Billion For WhatsApp and What It Means For Music

whatsappLate yesterday Facebook paid $16 billion for WhatsApp, a mobile messaging app that many in the U.S. have never heard of.  According the the SEC filing, the price includes $14 billion in cash and $12 billion in Facebook stock, plus another $3 billion in restricted stock that may be paid to WhatsApp staffers over the next four years.

Pirate Sites Earn $227 Million A Year In Ad Revenue [INFOGRAPHIC]

music piracyAdvertising, and the profit made from it, on sites that offer or link to unauthorized and uncompensated content has long been major problem for the music industry. A new report, "Good Money Gone Bad" published by the Digital Citizens Alliance, estimates that the major pirate sites generate $227 million in yearly ad revenue including major brands like Amazon, McDonalds and Xfinity.
