(UPDATED) A new study by researchers at Boston University School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health look at the lyrics in songs on Billboard's year end charts FORM 2009-2011. They found that 23% included a mention of alcohol with 6.4% naming a specific brand. The four brands that dominate popular song lyrics are:
- Jack Daniel's whisky
- Hennessy cognac
- Grey Goose vodka
- Patron tequila
These four accounted for more than half of the alcohol brand mentions in all of the surveyed songs.
Songs classified as Urban had the highest percentage of alcohol and brand mentions. according to the study:
"The context associated with alcohol brand mentions was almost uniformly positive or neutral. Public health efforts may be necessary to reduce youth exposure to these positive messages about alcohol use."
